LOGGING

DRIVING/ LOGGING

Everyone is a little different, but Nathan and Elly Foote are more different than most. In the early 1970s they spent nearly five years making a 20,000 mile trail ride from the southern most tip of South America to Southbank, British Columbia. That must've been enough travel, for they are still in Southbank where they log with horses and conduct horsemanship schools for girls at their Saddle Tramp Wilderness Ranch. They have produced a video to show how they log with horses. Nathan fells the trees   200 year old, 90 foot tall spruce  and cuts off the top and branches. Note that Nathan wears a hard hat and noise suppressers. The remaining 50 foot long log is skidded down to a landing by Elly where it will be later loaded onto the bed of a large logging truck. The truck will carry 40 to 60 logs, depending on their diameter.

The log which Elly is skidding at the right has a butt diameter of about 23', a little large for horse logging without an arch or other aid, but she is bringing it down a very steep trail (about 30%). The optimal skid trail has just a slight incline and is no longer than 300 feet.

Draft Horses
Our Belgian Draft horses, the gentle giants, are the king pin of our whole operation.  They work logging all winter, supporting all of us.
Show Draft Horses
During the summer, they enjoy being driven and ridden by students. We make long line driving part of the education of all young horses and encourage the students to learn the skills with us.
